Well, when I first got it, all the buttons and oopitns confused me a lot. You should know that photoshop projects have layers, which is helpful but confusing at first. You first have the background layer and then if you paste something, it will create a new layer for that pasted image. Then if you create some text, you have another layer. You'll see a list of layers on the bottom right. You can right click these layers and click on blending oopitns to add some effects like a shadow and other stuff. Really the best thing you can do is just get used to where all the buttons are and test all the tools to see what they do. Also, right click the tools. Some tools have to be switched to get to them. For example, the paint bucket tool and the gradient tool are on top of each other and you have to right click that button and switch to the one you want.
